Description
Although born in Newburgh, NY, Major John Ellis Wool had strong ties to Troy. His military career spanned 51 years, and he served in three consecutive wars - the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War - with other important assignments between these conflicts. Throughout his career, he was considered to be a highly capable officer, earning accolades, promotions, and even the thanks of the US Congress. As the time of his forced military retirement in 1863, he was the oldest officer to execute active command. This program will explore his illustrious military career as well as his connections to Rensselaer County.
Jim Cochran is a retired literature teacher from Rensselaer High School. He describes himself as an amateur historian who is very interested in local history and the Civil War.
