Program Description

Description

Fort Orange was constructed by the Dutch at the same early date that the English were landing at Plymouth Rock. Nothing remains in either location from these first houses built circa 1620, however, both the Hudson and Mohawk Valleys contain a number of fine examples of Dutch architecture from the 17th and early 18th centuries.

Marilyn Sassi, historian, antique expert and professor at Schenectady Community College, will focus on the history of the Schenectady Stockade area. This presentation will also include a look at paintings from James Eights, who lived in Albany in the 19th century, and Len Tantillo, a local artist who has done extensive research in recreating how Fort Orange, Schenectady and Manhattan appeared in the 17th century.
