Program Description

Description

Private Samuel Helms was an American soldier during the War of 1812, who left his camp in Ulster County to check on the well-being of his family. It was his intention to return as he had done twice before. However, he was charged with desertion by an illegal court martial and executed. This program will present almost 13 years of research and evidence of the illegal court martial, wrongful desertion charge and execution and Bobbie Reno's efforts to clear his name as a deserter.

Bobbie (Roberta) Reno is the East Greenbush Town Historian.
