Program Description

Description

Join Alan Via for a practical overview of winter hiking. He’ll cover essential layering, key gear choices, staying comfortable and hydrated, and how to navigate snowy or icy terrain safely. This program is ideal for seasoned hikers, beginners, or anyone who enjoys local preserves in winter.

Alan is the author of Doghiker – Great Hikes with dogs from the Adirondacks through the Catskills and he will also offer tips for hiking with dogs in winter and other seasons—paw protection, warmth, hydration, and trail selection. Questions are welcome, but please leave your dogs at home for this library event.

Alan is a multi-round Winter 46er and Catskill 3500-er. He has completed the Northeast 111, the Adirondack 100, and the Catskill 100 and 200 Highest lists, and has led trips throughout the western U.S. He served 14 years as Outings Chair for the Albany chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club. A dedicated cold-weather hiker, he jokes that it’s always easier to add layers in winter than remove them in summer.
