Program Description

Description

Jane Austen’s novels are timeless yet firmly rooted in the world she knew. This talk invites readers to see that world through her eyes as we explore the places she lived and visited—from London streets to seaside resorts—and the details that shaped her stories: countryside landscapes, elegant homes and gardens, fashionable dress, graceful carriages, and daily life. We’ll conclude by celebrating Austen’s birthday with cake and a chorus of “Happy Birthday.” The raffle for the Regency Romance basket will be drawn during the program.

David Shapard, who earned a Ph.D. in history from UC Berkeley, is the author of annotated editions of all Jane Austen's novels, published by Penguin Random House. He has been the guide for two Austen-themed tours of England, has taught two online courses on Austen, and has given more than fifty talks on different aspects of Jane Austen to a variety of audiences.

Registration required. Regency dress invited.
